WHY HAVE A HAIR TRANSPLANT?

It is true that hair transplantation is a cosmetic procedure much like having Botox/Fillers or a Face-lift but what most people don’t realize is that for people suffering from genetic baldness (Male and Female Pattern Hair loss), it can be life changing!  Hair transplantation restores not only the hairs lost but also brings a renewed sense of self.  Hair transplant surgery helps you face the world with more confidence.

AT WHAT AGE CAN YOU HAVE A HAIR TRANSPLANT?

For early onset hair loss, we advice most patients to wait until their 20’s to have surgery. Most individuals who have a transplant are in their 50’s-60’s.  However, it is never too late or too early to consider this option.  It is possible to do the surgery earlier or later but for all patients, we need to select the good candidates (those who have good donor hairs and the ones with the right expectations). Hairline design and planning ahead are crucial in the ultimate outcome and satisfaction of any patient considering hair surgery.

WHAT IS HAIR TRANSPLANTATION?

Hair transplantation entails harvesting your own permanent hairs from the donor areas (sides and back), individually cutting and trimming the donor hairs into the follicular grafts (composed of 1-hairs, 2-hairs, 3-hairs, 4 or more hairs), and finally transferring them to the recipient areas (thinning or balding areas) via insertion into small incisions on the scalp.  These incisions are made to mimic the normal direction of scalp hairs so that the results are natural .

There are 2 techniques in hair transplantation:

1.  Strip FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) – hair grafts are taken from a strip of skin from the scalp

2. FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) - hair grafts are extracted individually using punches (manual, motorized-machine assisted, or robotics).

WHAT IS THE BEST HAIR TRANSPLANT FOR ME?

Strip FUT is for you if you:

1.  Do not wish to shave your donor hairs for surgery.

2.  Want to go back to work immediately with less chance of detection (camouflaging with existing long hairs).

3.  Like wearing your hair long and are not considering cutting your hair short or shaving.

FUE is for you if you:

1.  Have no problem shaving your donor hairs for surgery.

2.  Can go back to work immediately with a cap/hat/bandana or whose job description does not entail facing clients.

3.  Like wearing your hair very short.

4.  Are afraid of cuts and stitches.

5.  Have very low pain threshold.

CAUSES OF HAIR LOSS

There are many causes of hair loss and various modalities of treatment depending on the type of hair loss.

There are two categories of hair loss (alopecia) – Non-scarring Alopecia which is hair loss without destruction of hair follicles and Scarring Alopecia which is hair loss that leads to a permanent destruction of hair follicles and with surrounding tissue being replaced with scar tissue and fibrosis.

The most common causes of hair loss are:

A.  Non-scarring Alopecias

1.  Male and Female Pattern Hair Loss - genetic baldness

2.  Telogen Effluvium – temporary loss of hair due to external and internal stressors , ie. psychological stress, illnesses and diseases, pregnancy, poor nutrition

3.  Alopecia areata (AA) – coin-shaped hair loss on hair-bearing areas (usually scalp and eyebrows)

4.  Trichotillomania – habitual and obsessive hair-pulling

Other less common causes are:

B.  Scarring Alopecias

1.  Scars – burns, surgical wounds (ie. face-lift scars)

2.  Inflammatory diseases – ie. Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia (FFA), Lichen Planopilaris (LLP), Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE), Cicatricial alopecia (CCA), Folliculitis decalvans, etc.
